How we do it

trout lily leaf prototypes

Prototypes are made

Prototypes of plant components are made, using a variety of paper types and weights, with colors and markings added.  Paper may be stretched,  fused and/or wired, to achieve a realistic look.

Field comparisons

The prototypes are compared to live plants, preferably those growing in their native habitat, since plants grown under cultivation or in containers may not be typical of the plant’s characteristics.  The prototypes will then be refined, and this process repeated, if needed.

Expert review

Whenever possible (which is usually), prototypes are reviewed by botanists or other experts familiar with the plant.  Another round of revisions, comparisons and review may be required before the paper plant design is finalized.
