Woodsong Botanicals
Woodsong Botanicals are made of paper. They may be sculpted in paper or painted on paper.
Or both.
Paper Plants
The paper world is a very large wonderland. Woodsong Botanicals paper plants are usually made of Italian or German crepe paper, or handmade papers from Japan, India or Korea. Or watercolor paper. These papers are colored with pastels, colored pencil or alcohol-based markers, to create realistic shades and the intricate markings that guide pollinators to the prizes they seek.
3-D Botanical Plates
Traditional botanical plates are painted or drawn on a flat surface and typically include blooms, buds and leaves as well as enlarged botanical details such as components of the plant’s reproductive system. In a 3-D botanical plate some of these elements actually spring from the page.
Tactile Learning
Our workshops are typically four hours, which may be combined with a botanist’s lecture and/or a hike to see examples of the live plant in nature. Workshops are usually focused on one species. Participants learn botanical features of the plant, followed by detailed instructions that enable them to make a replica that they will take home. Some past participants have used the skills taught in workshops to make paper botanicals on their own.
Woodsong Botanicals strives to attain botanical accuracy as much as possible, building on the potential of the medium. Pieces are created at scale and placed in a clay pot, recycled glass container, bark or wreath. The focus on scale drives the choice of media. Flowers too small to make out of paper are drawn or painted.
